How to Remove or Extract PDF Pages

Whether you need to delete unwanted pages or extract specific ones into a new document, our free tool gives you full control with visual page selection.

  1. Upload your PDF: Click the upload area or drag and drop your PDF file. All pages are rendered as visual thumbnails so you can see exactly what each page contains.
  2. Select pages: Click on individual page thumbnails to select or deselect them. Selected pages are highlighted with a colored border. You can also type page ranges like "1-3, 5, 7-10" in the range input field and click Select Range.
  3. Choose your mode: Select Extract to create a new PDF containing only the selected pages, or select Remove to create a new PDF with the selected pages deleted.
  4. Use selection tools: The Select All and Deselect All buttons let you quickly work with large documents. Invert your selection if you need the opposite set of pages.
  5. Download the result: Click the action button to process and download your new PDF. The original file is never modified.

Why You Need a PDF Page Removal Tool

PDFs rarely contain exactly the pages you need. Scanned documents often include blank pages, cover sheets, or separator pages that add clutter. Reports and manuals contain appendices or sections that are irrelevant to specific readers. Merged documents may include duplicate pages or content from the wrong source file.

The ability to remove or extract pages gives you precise control over what your final document contains. You can strip away unnecessary content before sharing to reduce file size and keep the recipient focused on relevant material. Extracting specific pages lets you create targeted documents from larger files without needing the original editing software.

Our tool handles this entirely in your browser. No files are uploaded to any server, which means you can safely work with confidential contracts, medical records, financial statements, and proprietary business documents without any privacy risk.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use page ranges for large documents: For PDFs with many pages, typing ranges like "1-5, 10, 15-20" is faster than clicking individual thumbnails.
  • Preview before acting: Carefully review the selected pages in the thumbnail view to ensure you are extracting or removing the right ones.
  • Extract vs. Remove: If you need most pages, use Remove on the few unwanted ones. If you need only a few pages, use Extract on just those.
  • Keep the original: The tool creates a new PDF and never modifies your original file. Keep the original as a backup.
  • Combine with other tools: After removing pages, use our page numbering tool to add fresh pagination to the resulting document.

Common Use Cases

  • Remove blank pages: Delete empty, blank, or separator pages from scanned or merged documents.
  • Extract chapters or sections: Pull specific chapters, articles, or sections from a long PDF into a standalone document.
  • Clean up before sharing: Remove cover pages, table of contents, appendices, or irrelevant sections before distributing a document.
  • Create custom handouts: Extract specific pages from textbooks, manuals, or presentations for targeted study or training materials.
  • Reduce file size: Remove unnecessary pages to create a smaller, more focused document for email attachments or uploads.

Technical Details

This tool uses the pdf-lib JavaScript library to copy selected pages from the original PDF into a new document. In Extract mode, only the chosen pages are copied to the output. In Remove mode, all pages except the selected ones are copied. PDF.js renders the visual thumbnails for the page selection interface. The entire process runs client-side in your browser using JavaScript, with no data sent to any server. Your PDF is loaded into memory, the selected pages are assembled into a new PDF document, and the result is offered as a direct download. All original content on the retained pages, including text, images, annotations, and formatting, is preserved exactly. Closing the browser tab releases all data from memory.
